I more and more enjoy things that are not begging for your attention in a loud / overwhelming way, and this wine is definitely an example of that.
100% Neuburger, my darling grape. Mid-slope of our Slovenské vineyard, with less topsoil and higher calcium content – we usually use these grapes for TRBLMKR, blended with other parts of the vineyard, but in 2019 this particular part kept being so different from the rest that I eventually decided to bottle it as a wine in its own right, because this material deserves it. It's so... subtle!
Understated elegance, no shouting, more introspection and focus. Or a long, quiet conversation with a person you really enjoy talking to because of their outside-the-box views and human depths. I could spend hours only smelling, searching, thinking about this wine...
Hence also the name (btw, I see melancholia as a positive thing, although I'm sure the Japanese would have an even more nuanced, precise and evocative term for the feeling I was trying to describe here .) and claim, inspired by my beloved Einsturzende Neubauten and their eponymous album.
Foot-stomped, pressed the next day, on lees in one big barrel until spring 2022 – I gave this wine loads of time as the vintage, however balanced, needed some time to hatch, but now it beautifully shows the harmony and acidity. This freshness also makes it ready for further evolution – Neuburger gets more interesting with time and I can definitely tell the force is gonna be with this one for a while. Wonderful restaurant material, too. A special wine with a special label by my dear wife Mirka. I like these special things.
