100% Gruner Veltliner from the young vineyard located right next to our “chateau”. Macerated on skins as whole bunches, this wine is a truly flamboyant, over-the-top aromatic orange wine – a style I don’t make much anymore, especially with Gruner, but you know that Nestarec practically rhymes with contradiction, lol. And this particular material and vintage felt like a perfect match for such a guilty pleasure.
One small barrel / 265 bottles only.
The colourful, tongue-in-cheek label is a sculpture by French artist Soasig Chamaillard, called My Little Mary. Our designer Klara Zapotocka (DesetDekaDesign) put it in the label design proposal, originally only as a visual reference from her research on Kitsch, but we fell instantly in love with it and absolutely felt that this image just fits so well with the wine itself - it’s expressivity, strong colours and aromas.. Just like Soasig’s art, there's a lot going on in this wine - it’s intense, bright and some might say kitsch and loud. Yet the result is so cool and witty and endearing and touching and instantly likable, something you want to share with your friends because it's very entertaining and smart. It puts smile or eveno laugh on your face but, on the second look/sip, there's an extra dimension where it provokes discussion – is it too much? Or is it too much indeed but actually that’s what makes it interesting? And who decides on these aesthetic norms? Shouldn’t everyone have the right to choose their own way of worship?
It also fits perfectly with the claim on the back label, which is an excerpt from the famous song My Favourite Things, immortalised by Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music. In short, it felt like one of these moments where everything just clicks and you're like bingo this is it - and we’re very happy and honoured that Soasig was game to let us use her work for this idiosyncratic wine.
